Organic 101

Organic is more than just a way of farming; it’s a way of life that brings humans and our earth into a nourishing relationship. Organic producers work with nature to grow healthy safe food that nourishes people, while protecting our land at the same time.

Many consumers choose certified organic food for what’s not in it. Organic producers follow a strict code of practice to protect human and ecological health. Organic farmers do not use synthetic chemicals, including fertilisers, pesticides, weed sprays and antibiotics. Organic products are also free of GMOs and artificial ingredients. In a time when many of the products used to make conventional food sadly have been linked to human disease and environmental degradation, organic offers a safe and hopeful alternative. Eating organic dramatically lowers exposure to pesticides.

However, the real magic of organic production is about much more than avoiding the nasty stuff. Organic farmers begin with a focus on creating healthy living soils. This builds the foundation for strong, naturally healthy plants and animals – and healthy food. Organic food has consistently been found to have higher levels of health-giving antioxidants. Organic milk also shows an optimal health profile when compared with non-organic milk.

Organic production benefits our ecosystems in several important ways. Organic farms create less pollution, protecting the health of our waterways while contributing to biodiversity. Well-managed organic soils can also store significant amounts of carbon, stabilising our climate and keeping our planet habitable for generations to come.

Organic also supports strong economies. The market for organic produce, in New Zealand and around the world, continues to grow every year. New Zealand’s organic producers are capitalising on this inspiring trend as more and more consumers seek out healthy, safe food, beverages and personal care products.

Thanks to international certification systems, organic is a name you can trust. Certified organic producers are independently audited every year. New Zealand’s respected organic certifiers guarantee the integrity of every step in the production process. When you buy an organic product, you can enjoy the assurance that it has been grown and made with true care, without synthetic inputs, in harmony with nature.
