The Buzz, November 25 Edition
Hello, and welcome to the November 2025 edition of the Buzz, your monthly dose of news from the Organic Sector and beyond.
This month delivered a decisive step forward for OANZ. At our Special General Meeting, members voted with 85% in support of evolving OANZ into a broader sector-good organisation. The outcome signals strong alignment across the organic sector and a shared commitment to building a coordinated model that strengthens our collective voice, improves sector-wide collaboration, and positions organics for greater impact in Aotearoa. The Board will meet early next month to map the next phase of this work, and we look forward to keeping members and supporters closely involved as we progress.
On the policy front, our team was back in Wellington last week for OANZ's seventh delegation to discuss the Gene Tech Bill. We met with ministers and officials to reinforce New Zealand’s strategic position in the global food system and to outline the risks the Bill would create, including impacts on biosecurity, coexistence, and market access. We also highlighted recent legal decisions from key trading partners that strengthen consumers’ right to know through clear labelling. While the Bill has stalled, it is expected to return, likely as an election issue, so vigilance remains essential. The discussions were constructive, and the information we provided is being actively followed up by officials, reinforcing the need for ongoing advocacy in the new year.
To continue campaigning against the Gene Tech Bill and maintain our advocacy and education efforts, OANZ relies on the support of its members and donors. Funds are limited, so please consider making a donation or becoming a member to support our efforts. Every contribution helps us continue our work campaigning for a GE-free future.
Finally, a brief update on the new National Organic Regulation. OANZ has successfully influenced the cost recovery approach, and MPI has opened consultation on the first tranche of Organic Notices. Further details are below.
