MRL Consultation Reopened – Glyphosate Still Under Review
Proposals to amend the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds
Earlier this year, New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS), a business unit of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), proposed changes to the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for several agricultural compounds, including the controversial herbicide glyphosate.
The initial consultation received an overwhelming public response, with over 3,100 submissions focused solely on the glyphosate proposal. Because of this, NZFS has not yet made a final decision on glyphosate. The proposed increase remains under review, and the MRL for glyphosate in the Food Notice is unchanged.
Rather than delay decisions on other substances, NZFS has now reopened public consultation on amendments to a separate group of agricultural compounds.
Compounds now open for public feedback include:
Dicamba
Hydrocortisone Aceponate
Lasalocid Sodium
Myclobutanil
Proquinazid
Quinoxifen
Trifloxystrobin
Ethanol
This consultation gives stakeholders another opportunity to provide feedback on how these chemicals are regulated in New Zealand’s food system.
📅 Consultation closes 5 December 2025
