OANZ Commends NZ First for Standing Firm on Gene Tech Bill

Organic Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ) welcomes New Zealand First’s strong stance against the Gene Technology Bill, commending the party for protecting New Zealand’s environment, public health, and global reputation as a GE-free nation.

OANZ’s GE spokesperson, Brendan Hoare, says ‘’NZ First’s position reflects the concerns of thousands of New Zealanders who made submissions opposing the Bill’s intent to allow the environmental release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).’’

“We commend NZ First for holding the line on this critical issue,” says Hoare. “As part of the Government, they’ve recognised what’s at stake, not just for the organic and non-GMO farming sectors, but for New Zealand’s international reputation and our right to remain GE-free.”

Hoare says that while the Government has indicated it will continue to pursue the Bill, NZ First’s firm opposition to the environmental release of GMOs marks a significant milestone for the whole farming community and its relationship with markets.

“While the Bill remains on the order paper, we believe it is well down the list. New Zealand First’s stance ensures the door to environmental release remains firmly closed for now,” he says. “That is a positive position for farmers, seed producers and our exporters who depend on the integrity of GE-free production systems. A GE-free production system also offers an assurance for consumers here and internationally who expect truth, trust, authenticity, transparency and choice that aligns with the 100% Pure proposition we promise the world.”

OANZ notes that NZ First’s position aligns with growing scientific, environmental, and industry concern over the Bill’s potential to undermine New Zealand’s biosecurity and market advantage.

“Once genetically engineered organisms are released into the environment, there is no turning back,” Hoare says. “Coexistence between GE and non-GE systems is impossible in practice. NZ First’s leadership helps protect our land, livelihoods, and export credibility.”

OANZ is calling on all MPs to follow NZ First’s example and prioritise robust protections for human health and the environment, transparent regulation, and consumer choice in any future reform of gene technology law.
