Vote Organic: The 2026 Election Scorecard

Kiwis care about how their food is grown, and now they have a clear, side-by-side view of where the parties stand on the future of organics in Aotearoa New Zealand

Aotearoa New Zealand's organic sector is growing at twice the rate of the wider food and fibre industry, yet certified organic land still makes up just 0.6% of our farmland. That gap is the opportunity. With the right policy settings, organics can deliver more for our economy, our environment and our health, for everyone who calls this country home, not just those already connected to the sector.

So this election, Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ) wanted to know: where do the parties actually stand on organics?

Why we created this scorecard

We believe every New Zealander who wants to see organic food and farming grow, and our GE-free future secured, deserves a clear, honest way to compare where the parties stand, without wading through policy documents.

The Vote Organic Scorecard is our answer. It brings together each party's position on the issues that matter most to the organic sector, in one place, so you can make an informed choice on 7 November.

So, we asked every political party the same seven questions, covering the priorities set out in our 2026 Organic Election Manifesto, from fully implementing the National Organic Standard to protecting New Zealand's GE-free advantage.

Each party was given the opportunity to respond with supporting evidence, statements or links to their own policy. We recorded and analysed every response, checked our summary back with each party before publishing, and placed the results on the published scorecard

The scorecard will keep evolving. As parties confirm, clarify or announce new policy in the lead-up to the election, we will update it, so check back throughout the campaign.

OANZ ORGANIC MANIFESTO

Launched in August, the OANZ Organic Election Manifesto sets out five priorities for the next government: fund the National Organic Standard, invest in growth architecture, secure global market access, protect GE-free status, and grow organic supply and domestic demand. Together, they're a plan to grow exports, protect the environment, and strengthen food security.
