SFFF PROJECT: THE STATE OF PLAY

New Zealand’s organic sector is built on the principles of health, ecology, care, and fairness, and is globally recognised for its integrity and premium quality. Yet the structures supporting it are no longer fit for purpose. Fragmented governance, duplicated effort, and chronic underfunding are weakening the sector’s ability to respond to rapidly changing global trends in food systems, trade, and consumer expectations.

The SFFF project has explored how to future-proof organics in Aotearoa New Zealand through the design of a unified structure that is resilient, credible, and self-funded. Over the past year, we have consulted widely across the value chain, from domestic producers and retailers to certifiers, exporters, and allied organisations.

The result is a proposal to move from a fragmented network of organisations to a streamlined, well-resourced entity that can deliver greater impact, growth, integrity, and resilience without compromising the values that make organics unique.
