Public Consultation Reopened on Glyphosate MRLs

Proposed amendments to the New Zealand Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Glyphosate

Earlier this year, New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS), a business unit of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), proposed increasing the Maximum Residue Level (MRL) for glyphosate in certain grains, including wheat, barley, and oats. The proposal would have raised the limit from 0.1 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg – a 100-fold increase.

The public response was immediate and strong, with over 3,100 submissions received, along with a petition opposing the proposal. Following this unprecedented feedback, NZFS has reopened public consultation until 25 December 2025, giving New Zealanders another chance to have their say.

Why This Matters

Glyphosate is classified as a “probable carcinogen” by the World Health Organisation. Critics of the MRL increase are concerned about potential long-term health effects, the impact on New Zealand’s clean, green reputation, and the safety of our export markets.

Organic producers and consumer advocates argue that increasing glyphosate limits could put New Zealand’s food exports at risk and undermine consumer confidence, whilst incentivising poorer farming standards.

NZFS wants to hear from you. Public submissions are an important way to ensure your concerns are considered before a final decision is made. Whether you are a consumer, farmer, or food business, your voice counts.

Submit your feedback before 25 December 2025.
