The Buzz, August 25 Edition
Hello, and welcome to the August 2025 edition of the Buzz, your monthly dose of news from the Organic Sector and beyond.
As spring approaches, OANZ’s advocacy work is reinvigorated, reflecting our determination to protect New Zealand’s organic sector with fresh momentum.
In July, Tiffany and Brendan made their sixth delegation to Wellington, meeting MPs and ministers to challenge the Gene Tech Bill. The Health Select Committee has delayed its report, and while the reasons remain unclear, we believe this signals disagreement within the coalition government. This internal tension gives us grounds for optimism that the Bill will face stronger scrutiny.
This delay gives us vital extra time to expand our outreach and education initiatives. But this work requires resources. If you value a GE-free future, please consider donating to help sustain our campaign.
Meanwhile, Minister Andrew Hoggard has approved a controversial FSANZ ruling redefining gene technology. New Breeding Techniques (NBTs) will no longer be classed as GMOs, exempting them from labelling and traceability. We are addressing these transparency concerns through the Commerce Commission.
Beyond GE campaigning, Tiffany has led a comprehensive submission on MPI’s proposed organic cost recovery framework after extensive sector engagement. This work is crucial to shaping a fairer policy for our sector.
Looking ahead, OANZ remains committed to defending the right to choose organic and non-GMO production, ensuring regulations protect our environment, health, and export markets.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we will build a resilient organic future for Aotearoa.
Ngā mihi nui,
