5 Actions You Can Take Right Now for an Organic Future
At OANZ, we believe a healthier, more resilient future starts with the choices we make today. Whether you're deeply involved in the organic movement or just beginning to explore what it means, you have the power to help protect Aotearoa’s food system.
The challenges are real — from the threat of the Gene Technology Bill to the widespread use of harmful chemicals like glyphosate. But so are the solutions. Organic regenerative farming offers a proven, science-backed pathway forward. What we need now is people – people like you – taking small, meaningful steps that add up to big change.
Here are five things you can do right now to help build an organic future:
1. Sign the Petition to HALT the Gene Tech Bill
Lisa Er, founder of the Kiwi brand Lisa’s Hummus, has started a petition to halt the Gene Technology Bill. Lisa is calling on the House of Representatives to establish a Commission of Inquiry into the health and safety of people and the environment, and allow time for wider community and stakeholder consultation. Lisa also thinks the bill disregards Te Tiriti obligations. And we agree.
If you agree, please take a moment to sign the petition today.
2. Speak Up on Glyphosate
New Zealand Food Safety is proposing to raise the legal limits of various agricultural compounds including glyphosate in key staple foods. If you care about food safety, public health and the environmental — now’s the time to have your say.
Here are two quick and easy actions you can take today:
3. Write to Your MP
Tell your local MP why protecting a GE-free future and phasing out harmful chemicals like glyphosate matters to you. Personal letters and emails make a real impact – and help our representatives understand what's at stake.
We’ve done all the hard work for you. Our activation toolkit has contact details for MPs and downloadable letter templates.
4. Choose Organic – and Support Local Producers
Every organic purchase helps farmers do the right thing for the planet and our health. Look for organic products in your supermarket and independent retailers, find farmers near you, and shop locally. Your dollar is a vote for the world you want.
5. Spread the Word – Together We’re Stronger
We’re building a movement, and movements need people. Share these actions with your friends, family, and networks. Whether it’s over a cuppa or on social media, your voice multiplies the impact.
